It is widely considered to be among the most essential elements of a skills-based classroom – especially those involving education on health.
It is a space where learners feel enabled to explore and discover. Positive learning environments are sanctuaries of learning founded upon security, empowerment, and guidance that bridge and address the physical, emotional, and mental needs of every learner.
In order to nurture trust that guides learners into true participation and engagement in learning, there is a need to nourish the stage by building an environment where all students feel secure, valued, and supported.
Building a Positive Learning Environment
The establishment of a positive learning environment begins with the teacher. Be it for parents or professionals, the creation of such sanctuaries for learning starts with their self-reflection. This self-reflection builds towards planning and continues into implementation, becoming dynamic in nature as the implementation of the curriculum guides both teacher and learner.
A positive learning environment is a living organism, a work in progress. To maintain it, there must be an active effort in nurturing how the environment is perceived and affects students.
While there certainly isn’t one size fits all solution to instantly building a positive learning environment, there are certain strategies that professionals and parents can follow to establish a semblance of benchmarks in their mission to provide for their little learners.
Build the Value of Learning
Students are more invested and the learning processes that happen inside the classroom when the topics or subjects are relevant to their success and happiness. To capitalize on this fact, teachers and educators must find ways to adapt lessons according to the interests of the students. It would help build a positive learning environment if teachers are aware of student’s passions and interests as utilizing such information will help students stay attentive and engaged.
Establish a Code of Conduct
It’s vital to establish positive and negative behaviors early on. Failure to do so can result in consistent disruption of the development of a positive learning environment because learners don’t have a clear understanding of what is considered right and wrong. To address this concern, educators must establish and enforce a clear code of conduct from the start.
Empower through Positivity
Learners don’t always share the same definition on positive behaviors. This is because children come from a variety of family, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This makes it absolutely paramount to establish a culture in a positive learning environment that imbibes daily routines with universally pleasant experiences, impact, and vibes. Such positive experiences, impact, and vibes include positive encouragement, reinforcement, feedback, and motivation. In interacting and teaching lessons to students, it’s important to give an emphasis to positivity as you do it.
The road isn’t easy. But it’s important that, as people who care for the bright minds of tomorrow, educators do the best they can in ensuring that learners are given the education they deserve. The first step towards this cause is the development and creation of a positive learning environment.
